EDSA left its mark on Philippine history as the site of the People Power Revolution in 1986 that led to the ouster of then-president and strongman Ferdinand Marcos, and Mrs. Aquino's subsequent rise to power.
After announcing the proposal to rename Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) to Cory Aquino Avenue, Filipinos turned to Twitter to express their reactions.
In honor of former President Corazon Aquino, Bohol Rep. Rene Lopez Relampagos filed House Bill (HB) 5422. The proposal is currently pending in the House of Representatives before the House Committee on Public Works and Highways.
“One cannot think of the 1986 EDSA Revolution without thinking of Corazon Aquino,” said Relampagos.
EDSA left its mark on Philippine history as the site of the People Power Revolution in 1986 that led to the ouster of then-president and strongman Ferdinand Marcos, and Mrs. Aquino's subsequent rise to power.
Because of this, Relampagos believes that it is only right that the avenue should be named after the late Philippine President and mother of President Benigno Aquino III.
“It would be but a fitting tribute to former President Corazon Aquino, woman of courage and valor, that EDSA — an avenue that became testament to the country’s love of democracy, be named after her,” Relampagos said in HB 5422's explanatory note.
Despite this, a large number of Pinoy Twittizens refuse to have anything to do with the bill and expressed their disagreement openly online. The topic became a Top Trend on Twitter late Wednesday afternoon, and continued to lead the list as of 6:30pm
